Phonetic Alphabet: A

A is for Alpha. Like this totally awesome alpha wolf. What a top dog.

Pumpkin Takeover

Halloween is just around the corner (well almost) and the corresponding pumpkin masses have finally hit our grocery store. Time to start brainstorming pumpkin recipes, jack-o'-lantern faces, and most importantly, costume ideas! Any suggestions?

Portrait Of A Young Woman With Antlers

Because everyone wishes they had some antlers.

Squeaky Clean

One of the super exciting things about our recent move (other than living in an awesome new city) is that we have 2 bathrooms in our life now! What a step up from our last apartment; there's nothing more annoying than trying to coordinate 2 morning routines in one tiny space. To fully equip our new space, we've slowly been acquiring a second set of bathroom essentials: towels, soaps, a trashcan, etc. One of the last things on the list, and probably theee most exciting thing (not), is a toilet brush! Here are our current top contenders:

1. Room Essentials from Target: $6
cheap, simple, not much else goin on

2. Enudden from IKEA: $7
minimal and white, this guy will totally blend in with the wall

3. Sävern from IKEA: $18
a little classier stainless option, but slightly more expensive

4. Ballo from Normann Copenhagen: $70
clearly the expensive option, but hot dang it's pretty!!

Neutrals Alphabet

I'm on an alphabet kick today for no particular reason.

Words for Today

The family friendly version of this beaut. Still packs a punch.

Phonetic Alphabet

I've always been fascinated by the NATO phonetic alphabet, it makes even basic street names sound like secret code. Cary knows it by heart and sounds suuuuuper cool when he spells things out over the phone. I, on the other hand, sound like a fool as I choose random words by looking around the room I happen to be in ("B as in... uhh...blanket?"). To help myself learn the official codes, and sound less like a total spelling newb, I've decided to illustrate the word for every letter.

Quinoa and Beans

After 2 months of fantastic honeymoon and new-city celebratory eating, we've been trying to reign in our food expenditures juuust a bit. I know cooking at home can be a great way to save, and right now I have plenty of extra time, so I thought I'd give "homecooked delicious" a try! My first menu consisted of orange-glazed chickencaramelized onion & thyme tart, and carrot & fennel soup with black oil. Weighing in at just over $100 worth of groceries, this meal was absolutely delicious, but in no way "reigning it in". Time for a little help from my good friends bulk beans and bulk grains!

Top Knot

Dear world, look at this fannnntastic top knot I created today. I'm so proud!

Music Mix No. 5

Today's mix has quite a bit of background, an absolutely fascinating web of events if I do say so myself! For months, I've been admiring the work of Digital Kitchen from afar (even back in Ohio), and have been captivated by the fantastic track used in the Digital Kitchen reel. I started working on a mix revolving around that track a few weeks ago, but held onto it for no particular reason. It's a very random collection of songs, and I wasn't sure if it really flowed well. It got shelved, forgotten, and was destined for music mix obscurity. (dun, dun, dun...)
(jump to present day) Today I headed down to capitol hill to meet a friend for lunch at Skillet, yum! Parking was a little crazy, so I circled a bit and found an open spot a few streets away. I was walking along, just a block from the restaurant, when I stumbled upon... the Digital Kitchen headquarters!! Waahhh soo cool!!! Clearly, the time had come to share this wonderful track and mix.

Seattle Being Seattle

After a solid 2 months of superbly sunny and warm weather, Seattle is back to being Seattle (or at least what I assume it usually does). I know it's the first weekend of fall, which means it really is time for things to get colder and blustery, but that is some serrrious grey!

First Ferry

Cary and I took our first ferry as Seattleites today! It was only a quick trip, a 10 minute ride on our way to visit Whidbey Island, but still so much cooler than just driving over a bridge. There was even a man a few cars up from us feeding passing seagulls from his hand!

Music Mix No. 4

So I thought doing music mixes every Tuesday (tuesday tunes) would be a great idea, a way to post something cool weekly while also expressing my love for music. But here's the deal. I listen to lots of music, and I mean looooooots and loooootttts of music. Posting a mix once a week is not enough!! Maybe later, once I've busted out a bunch of initial mixes, I'll slow down... but for now, no more tuesday tunes! To celebrate, here's a mix:

1. Bon Iver // Skinny Love
2. Of Monsters And Men // Dirty Paws
3. The Avett Brothers // Live And Die
4. Marc Cohn // Ghost Train
5. James Taylor and Mark Knopfler // Sailing To Philidelphia

Backpack, Backpack

1 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 / 6
Continuing with the back to school trend (I know that happened like a month ago for everyone else, but I will forever be tainted by the late-start quarter system at Ohio State) I've seen so many fantastic backpacks out recently! I wish I had something to carry around so I could justify one of these babies, maybe I'll finally go get my washington library card! (Hello stacks of beautifully illustrated children's books... it's not weird, I'm a designer!)

Girls Getaway: Exit 38

My idea of a great girls getaway? Climbing a few easy pitches at Exit 38, wahoo!! The perfect opportunity for observing cute wildlife, taking in gorgeous scenery, and feeling sooooo accomplished at the end of the day :)

Ohio Love

The leaves are just starting to change in our neighborhood, which means its practically fall, yipee!! Fall always makes me think of back to school, and back to school always makes me think of Ohio.
Time for a little ohio-pride wishlist!

Inspired by the "font" on thisawesome cake topper, I tried a little bit 'o paper cutting today. I think it would be so neat to cut a whole alphabet and have a custom cut font!

Words For Today

As a huge fan of Beecher's Flagship Cheddar (a seattle classic!) and therefore, an even huger fan of Beecher's Mac & Cheese, this recipe was a godsend. We made it the other night and it was faaabbbbbulous! (and probably enough calories to last a human being a week, but hey. its worth it.)
from the Beecher's website
SAUCE 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
3 1/2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 1/2 cups whole milk
7 ounces Flagship cheese, grated (about 1 3/4 cups)
1 ounce Just Jack cheese, grated (1/4 cup)
½ teaspoon coarse salt
¼ to ½ teaspoon chipotle chili powder
1/8 teaspoon garlic powder PASTA 6 ounces penne pasta (about 3 ¼ cups)
1 ounce (1/4 cup) Flagship cheese, grated
1 ounce (1/4 cup) Just Jack cheese, grated
¼ to ½ teaspoon chipotle chili powder Instructions
To prepare sauce, melt butter in a heavy-bottomed saucepan over medium heat and whisk in the flour. Continue whisking and cook for 2 minutes. Slowly add milk, whisking constantly. Cook until sauce thickens, about 10 min…

FYI Poster

Just finished my entry for Seattle's "FYI is a Poster Show" hosted by AIGA Seattle. It'll be printed and on display during the Seattle Design Festival, wahoo!!

I chose "Mountainousity" as my topic (a word I made up yesterday):
"Ever find yourself wondering which state is “most mountainous”? Well you’re in luck! Mountainousity is a scale created to answer just that. The exact forumla takes into account the total number of mountains in a state (or summits as defined by the USGS), the height of the tallest mountain in the state, and the prominence of the tallest mountain in the state."
