Big Kids Easter Egg Hunt

Image
For our potluck gathering tonight, I concocted a super fun idea for a "big kids easter egg hunt". Basically its a regular easter egg hunt (candy in plastic eggs), plus a few lucky "special prize" eggs that look like the candy eggs, but have slips of paper inside that match up to big kid prizes. Like wine. And good chocolate. And gift certificates to our favorite taco tuesday spot. I'm so excited to see what everyone thinks!! :)

Easter Blooms

The hyacinths in our yard are so lovely right now. They started blooming last week, and are in full swing today (perfect timing for such an Easter-y plant!)

Easter Foods

Image
Cary and I have been invited to an Easter potluck this weekend, hoorahhh! I love potlucks. I've been patrolling pinterest all week for good Easter-y foods, here are my top picks:

1. Carrot Cake Macaroons / 2. Pear & Thyme Fizz / 3. Marmalade Glazed Ham / 4. Scalloped Potatoes / 5. Glazed Fingerling Potatoes / 6. Roasted Asparagus

Back to Spring

Image
After some crazzzy weather this week, we're finally back to nice springy sunshine :) I'm still in recovery mode from a nasty cough (perhaps brought on by our total-lack-of-sleep-windy-freezing adventure last weekend?) but we're hoping to do some planting in the garden today and tomorrow.

Windy Weekend at Vantage

This weekend we attempted to sleep in a tent during a 30mph wind storm...

Pi Day

Its March 14th (3.14) my favorite nerdy but delicious holiday! Hope you treated yourself to some pie! I attempted my first rhub-apple pie tonight (that's rhubarb + apple for all you non-pie connoisseurs) which is basically a mash up of my 2 favorite pie types. It was spectacular.

I'm a long time fan of the Cook's Illustrated vodka pie crust recipe(thanks Nick Vallo!) and mixed a few filling recipes to end up with something like this:

--

Rhub-Apple Pie

3 cups rhubarb, chopped
2 apples, chopped
1 cup sugar
1 small lemon (just the juice)
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp cinnamon
3 tbs flour

Coupeville, WA

Coupeville is theeee cutest! We thoroughly enjoyed the adorable shops, delicious eats, and a fun waterfront area (complete with mini-nature center). We lucked out with a gorgeous day, and even caught glimpses of Mt. Baker across the sound.

Ferry Fun: Part 2

Image
After hearing about how awesome it is to feed seagulls, Lex and Mom certainly couldn't miss out on all the fun! This time my companions were a bit braver, and I was able to get a few good shots of the action.

Countdown

Only 18 days until GOTS3. So. excited. Not sure how we're going to watch it (since were totally tv-less, and it's only on full blown HBO expensive cable) but we'll find a way!!

Heather Lake

Image
Cary, Mom, Lex and I took a fabulous hike up to Heather Lake last week. Lush green forest for the first half, 10 feet of snow near the top, and sunshine the whole time... we couldn't have asked for a more beautiful day!

Langley, WA

Image
After our ferry ride, we took N&P to visit the cute little island town of Langley, WA. Despite the (typical northwest) overcast day, beach combing for sea glass on the rocky shore was tons of fun. We even had a surprise sighting of a Spotted Ratfish(as later identified for us by iNaturalist.org), a crazy looking deep-sea shark with glowing eyes, as it got pulled near to shore by the incoming tide.

Ferry Fun: Part 1

Image
Riding the ferry is super fun (and cheap!) and is quintessential Seattle in my option. Now that we've ridden more than a few times, we've learned some tricks for a super fun ride... aka bring crackers to feed the seagulls!! Nana and Popop were our first ferry-riding visitors, and were a little too nervous to participate in feeding, but had a good time watching them swoop down to take crackers out of my hand!

We've finally emerged from the whirlwind of visitors! Here are a few shots from the bro and sis taken in various spots during their visit.

Guests Ahoy

If it seems a bit quiet here in Bork-land, it's only because we've been so delightfully busy.  As usual,  when things are the most exciting, I have zero time to write about anything. We've got Nana & Popop in town with us at the moment, Lex and Dan arriving tonight, and Mom & Dad coming in tomorrow, whoooie!!
